A Brand Built Through Experimentation
White Dust Handcrafted did not begin with a large product catalogue or a ready-made path to growth. It began in 2021, when 23-year-old Rohit Aryan founded the business during his final year of college, working from a small, one-room factory in Ranchi with financial support from his father.
Rohit had completed his BBA from BIT Mesra and held a specialisation in HR from IIM Kozhikode. His ambition was practical and long-term: manufacture products himself and build an Indian brand that could eventually become part of the everyday lives of thousands and lakhs of people. He also wanted to create employment opportunities in his hometown.
From One Product to a Wider Range
The company initially focused on agarbattis. But between 2021 and 2023, annual sales remained below ₹10 lakh. Building trust as a new brand took time, while inconsistent sales made it difficult to manage ongoing costs.
Rohit considered shutting down White Dust, but chose to revisit the product strategy instead. The team spent five to six months testing products and refining production methods. Some experiments failed and led to wastage and financial losses, yet the aim was to build a broader portfolio under one brand.
White Dust eventually expanded into Ghee Diyas, Pure Camphor, Bhimseni Kapoor and other puja and devotional products. Launching its own online store helped the company broaden its reach beyond its initial product category.
A Defining Year
The turning point arrived in 2024, when White Dust crossed ₹20 lakh in monthly sales for the first time. Sales in that month were greater than the company’s combined sales over its first three years.
Marketplace growth and digital advertising brought the products to more customers. The company expanded production to meet demand and began setting new sales records. Yet scaling meant higher working-capital needs for inventory, manufacturing, salaries and marketing.
A credit line from Meta and later financial support through the Government of India’s Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) scheme helped address some of those funding requirements. Rohit has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India for initiatives that support growing Indian businesses.
Reaching Customers Across India
White Dust’s growth brought interest from retailers in different regions, including Jammu, Ladakh and the Andaman region. The company also entered quick commerce, giving customers access to its products through faster delivery channels in supported locations.
The pace of product movement changed considerably: items that once took months to sell could, in certain cases, move within two or three days. The business grew from its original one-room factory into a crore-plus D2C company with a larger production setup and a growing team.
Even as the business expanded, Rohit says the purpose was never just revenue. He wanted to manufacture in India, build for Indian customers and create opportunities from Ranchi.
The People Behind the Progress
Rohit’s mother, mama, sister and father stood by him through the difficult early years and the progress that followed. As the first entrepreneur in his family, their support has been an important part of his experience.
His first employee, now the company’s Production Head, has seen the business evolve from its earliest days. A remark from him continues to stay with Rohit:
“Sir, aapne kaha se shuru kiya tha aur aaj kaha tak aa gaye hain.”
For Rohit, the words sum up a transformation that cannot be measured by sales alone.
Looking Ahead
Rohit believes progress comes from discipline and the willingness to act even when the path is uncertain. His personal philosophy is:
“You already know what you need to do to make it right. Most of the time, you’re just negotiating with your comfort.”
White Dust is now focused on developing its product range, strengthening operations and reaching more customers across India. Its founding ambition remains unchanged: build in Ranchi, manufacture in India and create products for India.
